Sundowns missing Mphela?

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns caretaker coach Ian Gorowa insists there is no point mulling over Katlego Mphela as the striker is still AWOL.

The stand-in Brazilians boss watched his men suffer a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates and Saturday night and was then asked if the Bafana Bafana forward would have made a difference had he played.

Mphela has been missing for over a month now as he demands a move away from the club and revealed he will not return to Chloorkop until he has officially been released from his contract.

"I have been asked this question many times... listen Katlego is a good player. If Katlego is available then I will use him but if he is not available then there is nothing I can do," said Gorowa.

"Katlego is nowhere to be found and that is the problem, but that's for management and it is not for me to comment, but as a coach you need the best players to play for you and Katlego is a good player.

"If he comes back I will use him, because Katlego is a good player."

Meanwhile, the former Moroka Swallows coach went on to explain the reason behind benching Matthew Booth, a player who had missed a single league match in 19 games before the Pirates clash.

"I didn't play him, because he is not quick and we were going to play against very quick players. I think Thapelo (Tshilo) did very well and I was also happy with Siyanda Xulu," said Gorowa.

Sundowns are now fourth in the standings as the Soweto giants look to erase the tag of the 'Pretoria Soccer League'.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
