Students outsmarted by Celtic

Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein Celtic handed a bamboozled Bidvest Wits a football lesson when they defeated the Students 3-0 at the Free State Stadium on Saturday afternoon in an Absa Premiership match.

Joel Mogorosi and Ruzaigh Gamildien netted in the first half while Lerato Manzini added the third in the second half for the victorious home side.

Celtic had the better of the early exchanges in the opening ten minutes.

Mogorosi picked out Gamildien on the edge of the box and the striker beat his marker as he cut inside the box and hit a curling right footed low shot, but his effort went wide in the seventh minute.

A minute later a relentless Celtic were at it again when Lerato Manzini failed to connect with a header on the post.

The ball was sent in again for the second time shortly after and this time it found Gamildien who could not score after his free header from six-yards was caught out by Wits keeper Ryan Harrison.

In the 23rd minute Celtic took the lead through Mogorosi after terrible defensive work from Wits.

Mogorosi was left unmarked on the right flank after Wits were all sucked in on the left side. The Botswana international had all the time in the world and scored calmly with a low shot that beat Harrison through his legs.

Phunya Sele Sele doubled their lead in the 38th minute. Gamildien connected with the head after Tsietsi Mahoa's cross from the left wing - he headed home into the bottom left corner of Harrison’s goal.

In the 50th minute, Wits could have reduced the deficit when substitute Matthew Pattison went on a solo run and with only the keeper left to beat in his path he poked the ball with his left foot into the side net of goal.

The men from the City of Roses made it 3-0 in the 66th minute after Manzini received a cross from the left wing and he powered home from the far post to send the passionate Celtic fans into a song of celebration.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
