Hristo Stoichkov (Gallo)
Johannesburg - With barely three months left on his contract, Hristo Stoichkov revealed that he has resigned as a Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach.

The controversial Stoichkov was speaking on a popular sport-radio show on Tuesday night and confirmed that he will no longer be managing Sundowns.

With further investigation, the Siya crew has been informed that Sundowns refused to renew his contract which is coming to an end in three months time. Stoichkov, who is reportedly earning around R700 000 a month, said that the reason for him not continuing  until June when his contract expires was because management was delaying negotiations for a new contract.

“I won’t be coaching this team next season because I have not been given a new contract. I had a meeting with the president (Patrice Motsepe) and I have reached the conclusion,” said Stoichkov.

The Bulgarian had a successful season with the Brazilians after guiding them to a second spot in this season’s PSL, just one point behind champions SuperSport United.

It is understood that his behaviour in the PSL this season was the reason the team didn’t offer him a new contract. The former Barcelona striker faced several disciplinary hearings this season.

When asked whether he would be involved in any way when Downs play Free State Stars in their Telkom Knockout last 16, the Bulgarian was reluctant to comment.
