Stars outshine United

Johannesburg - Platinum Stars made their superiority count as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United in their Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Mduduzi Nyanda and Mahlatse Makudubela sealed the victory, while Terrence Mandaza was on target for United.

It was a thoroughly deserved win for the home side, who were on top throughout and had enough chances to win the game comfortably.

After a frustrating first half that ended 0-0, Stars hit the front as Siphelele Mthembu teed-up Nyanda for a well-taken left-footed strike.

That lead was wiped out by Mandaza, who profited from some hesitant defending to equalise for his side 10 minutes later.

After Robert Ng’ambi had missed a guild-edged chance to give his side the lead again, Stars did find the winning goal 12 minutes from time as the influential Nyanda drove a low ball into the area and Makudubela turned the ball home.

It is sweet revenge for Stars, who were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by the selfsame Maritzburg side just last weekend.
