Durban - Ghanaian striker Abdul Basit Adam scored the only goal of the match as Free State Stars defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 in their PSL encounter at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.
WRAP: PSL
Basit opened the scoring early in the first half to hand his side their first away win of the season, while Arrows have now lost twice at home.
Vuyisile Ntombayithethi should have done better for the hosts in the third minute when he a free-kick from Philani Shange dropped for him inside the box, but he hesitated and allowed Sadate Ouro-Akoriko to clear.
The deadlock was broken seven minutes later when Adam towered above Jabulani Nene to head home from close range, connecting with a cross from Enva Wiltwer.
The visitors almost extended their lead in the 24th minute when Sibusiso Mthethwa fired past Siya Mngoma from the left side of the box, but Gift Sithole was there to make the clearance.
Sithole came close to leveling matters for the home side a minute later, but the defender headed wide at the far post after making a good run to meet Shange’s in-swinging free kick.
The hosts threatened early in the second half with Bongi Ntuli using his strength to control the ball inside the box before forcing a decent save from Daniel Agyei.
Abafana Bes’thende had two chances to equalise in the 62nd minute but Ntombayithethi saw his effort coming off the post before Tom’s follow-up shot was blocked before the line by a defender.
Four minutes later Ntuli set the ball up for Jabulani Nene just outside the box on the left, but his powerful shot sailed over the crossbar.
Despite dominating possession throughout the second half, the hosts failed to get it right in the final third and in the 87th minute Bongi Ntuli could only drag his low shot wide of the target.
