Pietermaritzburg - Free State Stars took the game to Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium, with goals from Edward Mnqele and a 90th minute strike from Katlego Mashego to see their side earn a 2-0 win.
The away side had the opening opportunity on seven minutes when Michael Morton fouled Daniel Agbagwu to give Free State Stars a free kick. The set-piece was taken on the right-foot by Ouro Sadate but it hit the wall from 30 yards out.
After a Martizburg attack led by Felix Obada, Free State went on the front foot and pulled out two consecutive corners a third of the way through the half.
On 19 minutes Stars broke out in attack again which saw Mashego send in a cross for Mnqele, who struck a right-footed effort into the top right corner from 18 yards out.
Just minutes after the half hour, Michael Morton was the first player to be written in the referee’s book for unsporting behaviour for a foul on Edward Mnqele, which saw a free-kick awarded to Stars.
After the restart both teams decided to make their first substitutions of the game, which saw Edward Mnqele replaced by Aleni Lebyane, while Maritzburg United took off Kurt Lentjies for Jabulani Ncubeni. Injury forced the home side to make the first substitution.
Maritzburg had their second player booked 62 minutes in when Peter Petersen laid a foul on Mzikayise Mashaba. The direct free kick was taken by Ayanda Gcaba from his own half to create open play for the leaders.
Sadate’s foul on Morton resulted in a free-kick by Hendricks. Meanwhile Maritzburg made their second substitution: Sibisi was replaced by Wayne Matle.
Two minutes later Agbagwu came off for Boitumelo Sekgobela in a tactical change, while Sekgobela shot a left-footed 20-yard effort from the left flank, but it was caught by ‘keeper Shu-Aib Walters in goal.
But it was Katlego Mashego that silenced the home crowd as the striker struck a low right-footed ball into the bottom of the goal from a comfortable 12 yards out, Chivuta with the assist from the right side of play.
