Rustenberg - Platinum Stars have completed a club record fifth Absa Premiership victory in a row with a 2-1 success over Wits at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory takes Dikwena to second in the table, where they will stay if Orlando Pirates do not take full points off Free State Stars later on.

Enocent Mkhabela scored a brace of goals for Stars, who dominated much of the game. Letsie Koapeng continued his fine form this season with a goal for the visitors.

The home side were ahead when Henrico Botes played the ball into the patch of Mkhabela, and the midfielder struck the ball home from the edge of the area, even if he did not quite catch the shot as he might have hoped.

The lead lasted just two minutes though as the visitors struck back. Mzikayise Mashaba’s inviting cross was headed home by Koapeng, with Siyabonga Mpontshane in the home goal getting a touch to it, but could not keep the effort out.

Botes and Benson Mhlongo headed wide from set-pieces, while Tintswalo Tshabalala saw his shot on the turn well saved by Wits goalkeeper Steven Hoffman as the home side made most of the running.

Calvin Kadi shot narrowly over for Wits on the hour-mark, while at the other end Thuso Phala’s brilliant strike from the edge of the area curled just wide.

Stars did get the goal their play deserved on 68 minutes though when Mashaba fouled Sibusiso Msomi for a free-kick on the right. Vuyo Mere’s free-kick delivery was flicked-on by Botes and Mkhabela was on hand to head home.

Phala hit the crossbar with a free-kick that deceived Hoffman in the air and crashed against the crossbar, saving the goalkeeper’s blushes.

Neither of these teams will be in action next week, with their next league fixtures to be played on November 20. Stars are away at Chippa United, while Wits host Ajax Cape Town.
