Stars down Wits

Bloemfontein - Bidvest Wits fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Free State Stars as the two teams began their 2012/13 Absa Premiership season at Goble Park on Saturday.

Ea Lla Koto scored both their goals in the first half, through Paulus Masehe and Noah Chivuta.

The Clever Boys were the first side who threatened to score when in the 15th minute a shot by Papy Faty from 18-yards was tipped over the bar by Stars shot-minder Kennedy Mweene

The home side took the lead when they received a free kick outside the box. Wome struck a right-footed shot which Wits goalkeeper Emille Baron could only parry into the path of Paulus Masehe, who put the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 20th minute.

Eight minutes later Ea Lla Koto doubled the lead. Luyondo Nomandela skilfully forced his way past the Wits defence on the left side and sent in a low left-footed cross which former Wits player Noah Chivuta was on the receiving of and slid it home to make it 2-0 by the 28th minute.

In the 40th minute Chivuta could have increased the lead as he hit a curling left footed free kick from 20-yards which went just wide.

In the second half, Stars picked up where they had left of in the first half when 11 minutes into the second stanza Nomandela tested Baron from 20-yards out and the former Bafana Bafana keeper could only stop the ball.

The home side continued to press the Wits defence and were unlucky not to score more goals, but deserved their victory.
