Polokwane - A first half blitz with goals from Saname Wome, Katlego Mashego and Edward Mnqele saw Free State Stars wipe the floor with Black Leopards, beating them 3-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
The first 45 minutes was a truly entertaining one as the match flowed from end to end, with both sides intent on attacking and with no thought for their defensive systems.
And with Leopards second from bottom on the league table before the start of the match one would think they would have made sure to tighten up their defence, but that was not the case and they were duly punished in the first half, conceding three goals.
To be fair to the visiting side, the Ea Lla Koto definitely played some good looking football as they stroked the ball around the park confidently and accurately. This allowed Free State to open up the Leopards defence with relative ease and create chances on goal almost at will.
Consequently, we only had to wait ten minutes before we saw the game’s opening goal, Saname Wome grabbing the first goal of the match with a clinical finish giving the keeper no chance, 1-0.
Then in the 20th minute Stars doubled their lead when Katlego Mashego found the back of the net after another good passing move saw him into space and he did the rest with a well placed shot, 2-0.
Two minutes later and the Ea Lla Koto confirmed their dominance of the match with a third goal, this time Edward Mnqele scoring the goal with a powerful shot from just inside the box, 3-0.
Shortly after the third goal Leopards suffered another huge blow as they lost their number one keeper who had to be replaced by Thabang Maluleke in the 31st minute.
However, instead of the loss dampening the Leopards mood they found inspiration from somewhere and pulled a goal back seven minutes before the half time break when Joshua Obaje scored the home side’s first goal with a deadly finish, 3-1.
The second half saw the Lidoda Duvha trying to fight their way back into the match, but they couldn’t find the right pass in the final third of the field that would break down the Stars defence.
For the visitors, they seemed content to sit back in defence and protect their lead. This made for a rather dull second 45 as Leopards lacked imagination in attack and the game ended 3-1.
