Stars confirm Lechesa departure

Free State Stars have confirmed the departure of assistant coach Duncan Lechesa just 12 days after he was officially appointed.

Lechesa, a former midfielder with the side, is thought not to be heading to National First Division side Royal Eagles, previously Sivutsa Stars, where he coached last season.

His place in the Ea Lla Koto technical team will be taken by the experienced former Malawian national team coach Kinnah Phiri, who was head coach of Stars at the end of last season, guiding them to safety from relegation.

“Lechesa handed in his resignation letter last week stating he is resigning with immediate effect and as a club we could not stand in his way but to let him go,” Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena said.

“We as Free State Stars would like to wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Stars announced the Belgian Tom Saintfiet as their head coach on July 2.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
