Stars, Arrows match abondoned

2009-01-31 17:44

The Absa Premiership match between Platinum Stars and Golden Arrows was called off after about 15 minutes of play due to a heavy thunderstorm accompanied with rain at Mafikeng's Mmabatho Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions of the North started with the intent to score an early goal, creating two chances in the first two minutes of play. Firstly, Henrico Botes nearly scored with a header, but he was called off for offside. Accordingly, Tshepo Ramokala got a chance after some great work by Godfrey 'The Godfather' Sapula. However, the ball went wide of the goal.

Stars were without their influential midfielder Stanley Kgatla, who was suspended. He was replaced by Edward Williams, while Arrows' in form striker Richard Henyekane, who was done with flu, was replaced by Siyabonga Vezi.

Jabu Mahlangu looked lively early on in the game, which was hampered by an early shower and, due to the poor drainage system, this soon resulted in an extremely slippery field. The thunderstorm also meant that the SABC broadcaster was soon without footage of the match.

Accordingly, the rain started to pour down even more heavily with the players running off the field, and advertising boards and even a dugout flying around due to the heavy wind. The referee had no other option than to call off the match.
