Sono targets Top-8 finish

Johannesburg - Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono has targeted a top eight finish ahead of the new season after guiding his side back into the Premier Soccer League.

The former Orlando Pirates legend is delighted to have once again steered his side to promotion, and at the first time of asking after their relegation in the 2009/10 season.

It was Cosmos' second demotion in recent seasons after they failed to beat the drop in the 2007/08 season with Sono guiding his side back up straight away then as well.

But after being scheduled to play against Kaizer Chiefs in their opening fixture at the FNB Stadium ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns at Makhulong Stadium, Sono is preaching caution prior to their season opener.

Speaking to SuperSport, Sono recalled how, upon their last promotion, they were hammered 4-0 by Orlando Pirates on the opening day of the season, a result from which they never recovered.

He said: "My aim is to qualify for the top eight, to consolidate our position in the league and qualify for the top eight.

"I don't think that is a tall order.

"The biggest challenge was getting the team back into the PSL and I've achieved. It was not easy; getting back and in the first year, it was a big achievement for us."

And ahead of their season opener against Chiefs, Somo added: "To be honest it's a very big concern for me, to start against two of South Africa's big giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns.

"It can be an advantage for us or a disadvantage.

"If you recall when we came back up last time, we got hammered by Orlando Pirates 4-0 and it effected the team for long time and we ended up getting relegated

"I am worried about what effect it can have on the team."

Sono also revealed that he is trialing two experienced defenders from Ghana to add some steel to his backline.
