Cape Town - Santos head coach Boebie Solomons has lashed out at the monthly PSL awards, which he feels is an absolute joke.
Gavin Hunt landed the Coach of the Month accolade for a third time this season on Monday while his SuperSport United striker Glen Salmon picked up the player prize.
He became the second Matsatsantsa player in two months to lift the gong after Daine Klate last time out.
The People's Team have not received any recognition despite being second in the PSL standings, despite their small budget and squad.
"Is it when your team is top of the log?," Solomons asked Football365.co.za regarding the selection criteria.
"Is it because of the results? I don't know. I'd like to know what the criteria is. It looks like it will be one team and its players winning it the whole year."
"If you're coaching a team like Santos, with no resources, it means you will never win it, because it looks like it is not about coaching ability! If I was coaching Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates it means I was going to win it every month, because they have the best players and their players get the best salaries. Who are the people making this decision?" he added.
"It is a silly thing! Look at the SAFA awards that happened recently. They said the nominees of the coach of the year award were Gavin Hunt, Styles Phumo and Jomo Sono.
"Now, Jomo's team is bottom of the log. Where is Styles Phumo coaching? I don't even know. It is a joke... we are making a mockery of our football. Who decides these things? I can be wrong, but I'm giving you my thoughts," Solomons said.
The PSL's PR and Press Manager Altaaf Kazi insists there is a set criteria.
"We have judges, who sit down and debate. This time we had Patrick Baloyi from Sunday World, Nkareng Matshe from The Star and a YFM representative, so it is basically the media. It is based on a lot of things. For example, in the coach's award we look at a win record compared to his counterparts," he told Football365.co.za.
