'Shocking' ref off the hook

Cape Town - It looks like, referee Harry Lekitlane has got away with murder after his poor handling of the game between Santos and Kaizer Chiefs last week.

This comes after Santos’ chief operations officer Edries Burton told the Siya crew that they will not complain to the PSL about the whistle man’s performance on the day.

The referee failed to award a penalty to Santos after Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe appeared to have handled the ball in the box and, worse still, Eleazar Rodgers’ goal was bizarrely disallowed.

Burton said, “We’re focusing on the next game, man. We’re not going to focus on that.”

Team manager Yusuf Gester agreed, “What can we do? We’ve got to carry on. The ref made a decision and we have to live with it. The linesman was there, the match commissioner was there…everyone saw what happened. The technical team is preparing for the next game rather than focusing on this issue.”

Clearly there is inconsistency in refereeing decisions in the league  at the moment and the recent incident adds further fuel to the claims by former PSL general manager Ace Ncobo that a lot is going on behind the scenes in local football…you’ve just got to watch this space!
