“I will call some of the players to come and rub shoulders with Bafana Bafana coaches and players,” said Mashaba.

According to Soccer Laduma, Mashaba attended the final of the Varsity Football Challenge final in Soweto on Monday, September 15 as the University of Johannesburg lost 1-0 to University of Pretoria.

“It was an impressive final, you can see that one goal decided the game. From the first whistle to the last, the two teams were at each other’s throat,” said Mashaba.

UP-Tuks' Jeremiah Nkwana's free-kick assured that the Tshwane-based University would retain the Varsity Cup.

In the inaugural tournament last year, UP-Tuks' went on to beat the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University 4-1 in the final.

Mashaba has indicated that the talent on display should be “nurtured” in order for the national team to bear the fruits.

The 64-year-old adds that in future he will consider selecting some of the players from the tournament and will urge junior level coaches to keep an eye for fresh talent.
