Serero: I let my team down

Thulani Serero (Gallo)
Johannesburg - A gutted Thulani Serero has confessed to Football365.co.za that he feels he let Ajax Cape Town down in the last league match against Maritzburg United.

Serero and company lost the title at the death to Orlando Pirates after the Urban Warriors were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Maritzburg United on Saturday, while Pirates beat another KwaZulu-Natal side Golden Arrows to claim the coveted trophy together with the R10 million cheque on offer.

Serero, who signed a four-year contract with Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday, says his dream move has done little to soothe the pain of faltering when it mattered most.

"It was very emotional losing the league and when I went home I felt like it was my fault, because I felt I could have done better," Serero told this site.

"I feel I didn't play well against Maritzburg United and that's why I feel like it is my fault that we lost it.

"Even the excitement of my move to Amsterdam has done little to take away the pain - the pain is still there.

"But congratulations to Pirates. It was between Ajax and Pirates, because they were consistent so I do feel they deserve it just as much as we could have deserved it had we won it."

The 21-year-old, meanwhile, says he is confident he can make his mark in Holland after sealing his move to Amsterdam, which apparently is worth a whopping R25 million and, according to reports, is a South African record involving a local club and an overseas one.

"I'm too excited about it, even though I can still feel the pain of losing the league. It is more like mixed feelings. I'm very happy to get a move overseas and this is something that I have been waiting for," Serero added.

"I'm glad our former player Eyong Enoh (the Cameroonian) is there at Amsterdam and that will help me settle in quicker. It will make a huge difference having Enoh around, because he helped a lot when I was there during my trial and having him will put me in a good position.

"I will leave in June to join them for pre-season and I don't know what to expect at this stage but I imagine it will be difficult for the first few months.

"But I can assure you I'm going to work very hard to make sure I make it there."
