Schalkwyk has been on trial at the struggling Cape Town club for some weeks and Santos are now ready to open negotiations over personal terms for the player.
It would be relief for the 29-year-old, whose injury problems over the last six months meant he has battled to find a club after being released by Orlando Pirates at the end of the 2010/11 campaign.
He looked set to join Golden Arrows for this season but a serious knee injury put paid to that and he has been touted around the clubs ever since.
“He is still training with us and we are speaking to his agent to see what we can do,” Santos team manager Yusuf Gester told SuperSport.com. “He will be with us until we break up for the festive season and then we hope he will return in January.”
Schalkwyk ended the 2010/11 season in fine form for Maritzburg United, where he was on loan from Pirates, scoring as the side drew 2-2 at Ajax Cape Town on the final day to hand the Buccaneers the league title.
Meanwhile, Gester confirmed that at the moment there are no plans to sell or send any players out on loan in the January transfer window.
