Soweto - Swallows ambitions of moving away from the relegation zone suffered another serious blow after they were held to a goalless draw by Santos in an Absa Premiership match played at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday night.
Moroka Swallows have only themselves to blame for not using their home advantage and making use of the chances they created.
The game did not lack spark from the opening minutes. Both sides displayed determination and zeal as they went into each other.
As a result, the tension was so thick as both teams searched for the first goal and it was difficult to predict the winner as both sides showed a will to collect the full points on offer.
However, the game was characterized by the elements associated with the present state of South African soccer: school boy error and impatience in front of goal.
Swallows could have taken the lead in the 23rd minute when Cisse Chieka tested Santos’ keeper, Lee Langeveltd, with a back header, but the Santos goal minder was equal to task fisting the ball away for a corner.
It was Zairon Van Beulen’s turn to put the coastal side ahead in the 31st minute, but the Santos defender directed his header wide.
The missed chances sparked the two teams into action as they threw everything into the game, but Swallows enjoying the home ground advantage had a slight edge over their opponents and continued to penetrate the danger zone.
Macbeth Sibaya could not believe his eyes after his well taken shot was saved by Lee Langerveltd in Santos’ goal in the 38th minute.
Their was no score during half time.
After a tongue lashing from their coaches, in the second half, both teams upped their gears but their attempts were thwarted by the defences manned by Swallows’ Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Nergadze Goirgi, and Santos’Zairon Van Beulen and Wayne Arendse.
Nevertheless, both sides meant business as they launched countless attacks and tried all the tricks to stem the tide, but missed chances meant no goals for both teams.
