Protect Komphela at first - Dumitru

Cape Town - Steve Komphela must please the Chiefs faithful from the outset if he is to remain in charge at the club according to former Amakhosi coach Ted Dumitru.

Komphela was confirmed as the new Chiefs coach at the club’s press conference yesterday and Dumitru was at hand to discuss the difficulties of taking on one of the biggest jobs in South African football.

“It’s not advisable to change everything from the beginning,” Dumitru said to Sport24.

“At Kaizer Chiefs you cannot afford to take uncalculated risks. It’s a very tricky situation.

“I have been there twice. Chiefs is one of the very few cubs in South Africa where you are allowed to implement your own ideas but at the same time you have another factor that is hugely, hugely influential and that is the supporters.

“In the club he will have freedom and encouragement but when it comes to the supporters there you have the judge – and that judge is unforgivable.

“Suporters at the big clubs are not just happy to win a game 1-0 and defend all the time, they want to see quality.

“He needs a bit of protection from management because he is going to go through difficult times at the beginning.

"The moment that the Chiefs fans think that you are not the right person you start having a few problems

“I applaud him for being courageous and taking that position. I think it is much needed.

“But he has to be very, very careful as to how he can blend results and quality. If that formula is not found quickly he is going to have problems,” Dumitru concluded.
