Preview: Chippa v Sundowns

Cape Town - Chippa United have an opportunity to extend their run in the Premiership when they host Mamelodi Sundowns in Port Elizabeth.

Chippa, who have been through a delicate transition this season, have now won three consecutive league matches, two of them against highly competent opposition. The club’s purple patch ended with a 2-0 win against Moroka Swallows midway through last month.

That result was followed up by memorable wins against Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu - a series of results which has seen the club entrench its status as one of the teams likely to finish the season in the top eight of the league standings.

Their opponents on Wednesday, October 22 have also enjoyed considerable success this season. However, that spell was ended when Sundowns could only muster a 0-0 draw against a highly competent Bidvest Wits at the weekend.

Whatever Sundowns do against Chippa United, it will have to be achieved without the services of captain Alje Schut, who has been sidelined by a knee injury.

In addition, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Lindo Mbatha are both grappling with ligament injuries. Both players are being monitored by the medical team at the club.

The jury is still on whether Siyanda Zwane will be available for selection this week, while there are still concerns about Bonginkosi Ntuli, Percy Tau and Rheece Evans, who all sustained injuries in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
