Polokwane down Bloem Celtic

Cape Town - Polokwane City beat Bloemfontein Celtic 3-2 in a thrilling PSL encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Polokwane City wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet with Jabu Maluleke putting the hosts ahead with only six minutes on the clock to officially open the account for the new season. City continued to dominate the early exchanges but early season rustiness was evident in the both teams’ play.

Rise and Shine appeared to take their foot off the pedal as the half progressed which left room for Thapelo Morena, who stepped up in the 34th minute to grab the equaliser for Siwelele.

Celtic continued to push forward in search of another goal, but 1-1 is how the teams headed into the half-time break.

The hosts made their intentions clear early in the second stanza with Puleng Tlolane going for goal in the 48th minute but his shot was pulled just wide of the mark. Tlolane was at it again in the 60th minute but Amour Patrick Tignyemb made easy work of the striker’s effort.

Polokwane were looking the better side in the second half but it was Lerato Lamola who grabbed the goal in the 70th minute to put Celtic ahead 2-1. Linda Shiba pulled one back less than a minute later to keep City in the game, 2-2.

Thobani Mncwango produced a fine finish in the 78th minute to put Polokwane City 3-2 to the good.

Celtic tried to get back into the game but Polokwane managed to hold on for the rest of the match to claim the 3-2 victory and maximum points in the first round of fixtures for the new season.
