Pitso: I tried to freshen up the team

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane admits that he wanted to freshen up his starting XI as they won Maritzburg United.

'Downs extended their unbeaten run in the Premiership to five games as goals from Themba Zwane, Tebogo Langerman and Surprise Moriri secured a 3-0 victory over Maritzburg at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

However, Mosimane is wary of the threat posed by Chippa United, who rallied from behind to clinch a 2-1 win against Mpumalanga Black Aces on Friday evening.

"Much better than Wednesday [goalless draw against Polokwane City] you know, that's why sometimes the goals might not come, but sometimes they come, and you've got to be patient and keep encouraging the boys," said Mosimane.

"And I told them that what happened on Wednesday, I've never seen things like this where balls hit the post and come out and Wayne Arendse keeps hitting posts with his headers, I think it's the fourth one.

"But I'm happy for [Themba] Zwane, he's scoring goals and that's why he's back in the national team, congratulations to him.

"Look, they [Maritzburg] had their moments in patches with [Kurt] Lentjies, he's very good, and [Ashley] Hartog, and Abia Nale also showed a little bit of experience.

"But at the end we had to drag the game because I told them they must just keep the pace a little bit low in the last fifteen minutes, take out Keagan [Dolly] and them, because we've got a big one on Wednesday you know.

"We're going to Chippa and we saw what happened on Friday, they were strong and they wanted the win, so I said we have to save the legs and kill the game slowly and pass, pass.

"But Surprise [Moriri] came in with his legendary experience and you know Surprise, when he has his moment and you leave him alone, he's quality.

"I tried to freshen up the team tonight and it worked out - just to freshen up the team a little bit and we keep rotating, as long as the quality remains the same."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
