Johannesburg - Maritzburg United are reportedly investigating their defender Dikilu Bageta for alleged match-fixing, after their 1-0 loss to Mpumalanga Black Aces last week Wednesday at the Puma Rugby Stadium.
Bageta missed a penalty in the game and the club are now accusing him of deliberately fluffing his effort in the 51st minute.
The Democratic Republic of Congo-born player has been suspended indefinitely pending investigations into the matter, according to the club's Chief Executive Officer Afzal Khan.
Khan told Football365.co.za: "The club is busy conducting investigations to check how deep rooted this is and we will then re-examine the issue.
"We have suspended the player indefinitely and he is not involved in any of the club's activities, which means he is not training or doing anything at the club or for the club."
The club are also not happy with the way they conceded the goal by Mpho Maleka a minute after Bageta's penalty miss and apparently, Bageta is allegedly to blame for this too, hence the investigation.
However, Bageta maintains that he is innocent and admits that he cannot believe his club would go to these lengths.
"I know I'm innocent. I did nothing wrong and I'm surprised that the team is investigating me. But I will not comment further until they are done investigating and so they can tell me what is going on. For now I can't comment."
Bageta's agent, Bajo Bajani, added: "We have spoken to our lawyer and at the moment we are waiting for them to conclude their investigations so they can tell us the way forward. We can't comment until then."
This is not the first time Bageta has found himself in trouble. Earlier in the season he lost the captaincy to Fadlu Davids after going AWOL and was fined after admitting that he had remained in Johannesburg to see some relatives after a match, though he didn't communicate this to the club.
