Mphela vows to keep scoring

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana hitman Katlego Mphela has vowed to pick up where he left off last season in the PSL scoring charts.

The 25-year-old netted 17 times for Mamelodi Sundowns last term as he finished as the league's top scorer prompting interest from abroad.

The former SuperSport United frontman was linked with moves to Birmingham City and Glasgow Rangers, however, the price tag the Brazilians put on his head waned off any interest in his services.

But while Mphela admits that he is disappointed not to have secured a move, he says he will give it everything for the Chloorkop outfit this season.

"I can't be happy that the move did not materialise but I must remain focused and put all my efforts into helping Sundowns," he told the Sowetan.

"I won't perform if I'm unhappy, so it's important that I remain focused. My plan is to score more than 17 goals this season because I have set myself high standards and I have to live up to them."

Mphela also heaped praise on new Zimbabwe striker Nyasha Mushekwi after he netted a brace on his debut for the club against Moroka Swallows at the weekend.

He continued: "It was his first game of the season and there is still a long way to go. From what I have seen of him, though, he is a strong guy who has power in both legs and I think he will do well for us."

Mphela failed to find the back of the net against the Birds, but he has warned that his best is yet to come.

"Not at all. It was our first game of the season and I was feeling a bit heavy, but I'm sure I'll be fine as time goes on."
