Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela is determined to prove
his worth at the Soweto giants after an underwhelming start to life at
the club.
According to the football411 website, the 29-year-old joined the Glamour Boys from Mamelodi Sundowns in
January after much fanfare. However, he was unable to make an immediate
impact for the Naturena-based outfit.
Mphela is the first to admit he wasn't able to deliver his best
first up for Amakhosi, pointing to a lack of fitness for his struggles.
“When I joined Chiefs I had not been playing at Sundowns and I
had to work hard to regain my fitness. That took until towards the end
of the season, when I was finally fit and ready to play. That’s why I
was scoring,” he told Soccer Laduma.
The forward notched up four goals in his last four league games,
with his upturn in fortune in contrast to that of his team, as Chiefs
slipped to second in the standings behind champions Mamelodi Sundows.
The Bafana Bafana man believes that no one person can be blamed for Chiefs' failure to defend their title.
“Football is a team sport and I think, as a team, we didn’t come to the party,” he said.
