More whites attend PSL games

Johannesburg - The 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup has played a massive role in changing the perception of many white South Africans about local soccer, reports Sowetan.

This is according to Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic, who is impressed by the ever-increasing number of whites attending PSL matches.

"I still remember when I first came to South Africa two seasons ago, I was informed that football was for black people and rugby for whites in this country.

"A few months later, this country hosted a successful 2010 World Cup and white South Africans attended the matches in numbers," Vermezovic said.

"We had the Soweto derby at Soccer City on Saturday and I was so happy to see that more and more white South Africans are coming to the PSL games.

"This is what we need in any society. Sport has played a big role globally in unifying society," said the Serb.

He said the hotly contested challenge for the Absa Premiership title race was also good for the game. He said many people were coming to the stadiums in big numbers because of entertaining football displayed in the top flight.

"The race is very exciting and it is not true that we have only two clubs in Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates challenging for the title.

"Ajax Cape Town are also in the picture and so is Mamelodi Sundowns. I think we still have a long way to go before we can say with conviction that either us or Pirates will win the league.

"Naturally, as Chiefs we are focusing on the league and I have discussed the matter with my players that we must channel all our energies into the league campaign. We are not relaxing at all - you can see how hard we are at training. We mean business," he said.
