Mokoena happy with Wits move

Johannesburg - Aaron Mokoena insists Bidvest Wits was the Premiership club he wanted to play for most after the former Bafana Bafana captain decided to return home.

Having parted ways with Portsmouth at the end of last season, the 31-year-old centre-back considered several options before he signed with the Clever Boys.

But Mokoena, who has also enjoyed four years with Premier League side Blackburn, believes he made the right choice by joining the Students.

"Coming back, I made a lot of contact with a lot of clubs but I wanted to come back (to South Africa) and enjoy myself," he said.

"Wits has a structure that I think I will fit in with.

"I looked at Wits and I had fantastic meetings with the management and I thought, 'this is where I want to be'. I am enjoying myself."

Mokoena added: "I see myself playing a role at Wits. I had a couple of meetings with the CEO and he sees me as kind of an ambassador for the club.

"Right now it's all about really playing my football and making sure that I help the club and that I contribute to the club's ambitions.

"The future will tell. We have a fantastic league over here."

'The Axe', as he's affectionately known by his team-mates, is also impressed with South Africa's recent performances under new coach Gordon Igesund.

"I hope we will do very well," said Mokoena, a veteran of 109 international matches for his country.

"We've got to understand that we've got to give the boys the support they need, so that the country can do well.

"It's not about the 25 players that are selected, it's about us as a country and we have to understand that we have a new manager now.

"He (Igesund) needs our support and I am hopeful that they can make the country proud."
