Modise revels in advanced role

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise says he is happy to step up to the challenge of playing a more attack-minded role for the Brazilians.

Modise had, of course, often played just behind the front men in the past, although in recent seasons his high work rate had been an asset in a deeper-lying, central midfield position.

In the 2-0 Premiership win over Moroka Swallows on Wednesday night, August 20, the 'Navigator’ played in the number 10 position, in a supporting role to Mame Niang, who scored the all-important opening goal.

Modise was at his energetic best, creating several goal-scoring chances for his team-mates, coming close to netting on several occasions, and generally providing a threat with his quick feet and creativity on the ball. Flair, combined with hard work, and his tackle to win possession deep inside the Swallows half, led to Niang’s goal.

“In the past few games before this one, we have been using Mame to play the long balls, which were intercepted a lot. So the coach ended up playing me as number 10 to find ways, and I’m glad the system worked today," the 31-year-old said after the match in Dobsonville.

Hopefully, we can continue from here and get better with each and every game we play,”

Brazilians coach Pitso Mosimane was relieved to see his side getting the victory after having failed to win in their opening three games in league and cup competition this season.

“I’m sure the Sundowns supporters were sighing with relief. We're happy to see them getting something tonight - they deserved something," Mosimane said.

"My boys have been digging deep. We have been unfortunate, getting (conceding) all these penalties, and a Roy of the Rovers goal (Travis Graham’s wonder strike) against Ajax. But its how football is - you just need one win and it will help the boys.

“The life of a coach is pressure. We are trained and go on courses to train how to handle the pressure. But I’m happy for the boys tonight."
