Mngqithi sacked by AmaZulu
Cape Town - Amazulu have announced that coach, Manqoba Mngqithi has been sacked after a string of bad results, following last season’s flirtation with relegation.
As a result, former Thanda Royal Zulu and Sierra Leone coach and current Durban Warriors coach, Roger Palmgren will take over from Mngqithi with immediate effect.
Usuthu currently sit in 15th place on the PSL table, with two points and are only kept off bottom spot by Jomo Cosmos, who has a slightly worse goal difference.
After Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Moroka Swallows, the writing was on the wall for Mngqithi, which was confirmed Usuthu’s club director, Graham O’Connor on the club’s website.
“Considering the fact that Manqoba has added a lot of value in the club but unfortunately the results were not forthcoming, hence we had to release him from his contract,” he said.
Although Palmgren will have another crack at the PSL, he had sympathy for his predecessor.
“Firstly I feel very sad for the coach because I’ve been part of AmaZulu, and I was one of the people who recommended him but we needed more points than we have.
“We’re all going to be judged by results as coaches. I promised myself after Thanda to never take a team without proper administration and a good team.
I still believe that even though we have not been getting the good results - we have a good mixture of young and experienced players,” said Palmgren.
Palmgren’s first match in charge will be an away against Bidvest Wits on 24th September.
Mngqithi becomes the first PSL coach to lose his job this season, five matches into the new season.
