Mngomeni: Meyiwa was in his prime

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates legend Thabo Mngomeni says goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa's passing was ill-timed, as his international career was just beginning to flourish.

Meyiwa, who was recently made Bafana Bafana captain, was shot on Sunday evening and was confirmed dead after being rushed to hospital.

Mngomeni, who like Meyiwa captained both Pirates and Bafana, expressed his despair to the goal-minder's family for their loss.

"I saw it in the morning when a friend of mine asked me about it (Meyiwa's death)," the former Buccaneers favourite told Football 411.

"It's not only a loss for Pirates, but also for the whole football fraternity in South Africa because he was now captain of the national team.

"My heart feels for his family because he had just reached another stage of his career where he was leading the national team.

"It's really painful because he probably also had many wishes on what he wanted to achieve on the football pitch. The timing was just bad because he was really on his way up.

"But everything happens for a reason. My thoughts are with Senzo's family. I wish for them to be strong during this difficult period."
