Meyiwa up for CAF award

Cape Town - The late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa is among the five-man short-list for the CAF Africa-based African Player of the Year award.

The shot stopper was one of the continent's rising stars, both for club and country, prior to being shot dead towards the end of October, and has been nominated for one of the top honours in Africa.

The other candidates are Akram Djahnit and El Hedi Belamieri, both of Algeria and ES Setif, while Congo are represented by AS Vita ace Firmin Mubel Ndombe and Fakhereddine Ben Youssef of CS Sfaxien will fly the flag for Tunisia.

Meanwhile, Manchester City and Ivory Coast superstar Yaya Toure, as well as Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan, are amongst the favourites for the 2014 CAF African Footballer of the Year gong, which will also be contested by Nigerian duo Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa, and Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays his club football for German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The award ceremony will take place in Lagos on January 8, where Toure will be looking to equal Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o's record of four African Footballer of the Year honours, having won the award in each of the last three years.
