Mere backs Zongo to shine

Cape Town - Platinum Stars captain Vuyo Mere has tipped midfielder Masibusane Zongo to play a crucial role in midfield in the upcoming Absa Premiership campaign.

The former SuperSport United and Chippa United midfielder penned a one-year contract extension during the off-season after featuring under coach Cavin Johnson towards the end of last season.

And, after assuring Johnson of his intentions to knuckle down and grab the chance handed to him, Zongo will have the chance to stake his claim for a long-term stay at the club.

"Look, we all know about the abilities of 'Zizo' [Zongo]," Mere told KickOff.

"He is a good player and the creativity he brings to the midfield will be a major part of our game this season. He is talented and he is always a threat because he enjoys taking on defenders and playing an attacking game."

Zongo has in the past made the headlines for his off-the-field behaviour, and Mere has taken it upon himself to take the midfielder under his wing.

He added: "Zongo is at a point in his career where he knows that he might not get another chance and he knows that he must stay focused."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
