McCarthy: Pirates come first

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy admits earning the PSL's Golden Boot is always special, but insists he is primarily focused on club's league standing.

McCarthy joined the Buccaneers as a free agent at the beginning of the season, with Sunday's spectacular winner against Maritzburg United marking the forward's fifth strike of the Premiership campaign.

However, the former Porto and Benfica ace, four goals behind current PSL top scorers Siyabonga Nomvethe and Katlego Mphela, feels Pirates' defence of the league title takes precedence over any personal accolades.

"To be a top goal scorer in the league is something special however that is not the focus," he told the club's official website.

"For now we are solely focused on getting to the top of the log table."

This past weekend's victory marked Bucs' fifth straight PSL win, hoisting Julio Leal's men to within three points of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

"I believe if we continue showing the fighting spirit that we've displayed in our last two matches we can reach the top but we must continue working hard," McCarthy concluded.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
