Matlaba out of Carling Cup

Cape Town - Thabo Matlaba is in a race against time to be fit for the start of the PSL season after suffering a grade two hamstring tear.

Thabo Matlaba will most likely miss the Carling Black Label Cup clash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday after picking up an injury in Orlando Pirates’ 1-0 victory over CS Sfaxien in the CAF Confederations Cup.

According to the Orlando Pirates medical department, the Bafana Bafana international has suffered a grade two tear of the hamstring.

Matlaba will require treatment and rehabilitation but it remains unclear how long the left back will remain on the sidelines.

Orlandopiratesfc.com confirmed that defenders Rooi Mahamutsa (Achilles) and Patrick Phungwayo (Achilles) will spend some time with the club's medical staff undergoing further treatment.

New signing, Gift Motupa, has resumed light training after injuring his ankle while doing duty with the national team.

The Carling Black Label Cup kicks off at 15:30.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
