Matlaba honoured to captain Pirates

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates defender Thabo Matlaba expressed his gratitude for being handed the captain's armband against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby on Saturday, October 31.

Matlaba led with aplomb, producing a brilliant performance in the 3-1 victory over the old enemy.

It remains to be seen whether Matlaba will be called upon again to skipper the Buccaneers against Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City on Wednesday.

"I don't know how to express the feeling. To lead a big team like Pirates is a privilege and honour. And to be on the winning side on the same day was a special feeling," Matlaba told KickOff.

"This was my first time to be a captain in my entire soccer career. I am happy with the support I got from my teammates.

"They were joking around before the game. They were happy for me and busy calling me skipper, skipper.

"We needed this victory more than anything to boost our morale after poor results in the league."

Chiefs and Pirates will have their rematch in the Telkom Knockout semi-final at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, November 7.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
