Marques named Birds coach
Johannesburg - Moroka Swallows have confirmed Zeca Marques’ appointment as the club’s new head coach.
It was always expected that Marques would replace Gordon Igesund at the helm of the Dobsonville-based outfit should Igesund land the Bafana Bafana job.
Igesund was appointed as the new Bafana Bafana head coach on Saturday, which has led to Marques’ appointment.
“Zeca Marques is given the opportunity to lead the team as Head Coach. Zeca will be supported by an expanded, skilled and motivated technical team in order to give him every opportunity to succeed.
The assistants to Zeca still need to be finalized, but with the technical team currently in place as well as Zeca and the large core group of players, excellent continuity is assured.
“We shared the news with the players and staff on Monday morning, and the players were very happy and supportive of Zeca.
“Zeca is a highly qualified coach who holds a Uefa A licence, the KNVB certificate from Holland as well as numerous sports psychology, nutrition and human behavioural diplomas.
He has also served at various times short internships with Bobby Robson at FC Porto, Ruin Bento at Boa Vista, Cilinho at Sao Paulo and at Braga in Portugal.
“He has been coaching as a head coach and assistant coach at all levels of the game for 25 years. He has been the assistant coach at Swallows under Gordon Igesund for the past 18 months and previously also under Rainer Zobel and Julio Leal.” read a statement on the club’s official website.
Marques’ experience and credentials speak for themselves, and having played an influential part in the Birds’ last campaign, there is no doubt that the highly-qualified coach can take over from where Igesund left off.
