The German coach’s future has been in doubt all week after a rant on television last weekend when he berated his players for their poor performance against promoted Vasco da Gama.
During the week, Middendorp was forced to issue an apology on the club’s website and looked a downcast and contrite figure on Friday as his Maritzburg side collapsed in the second half against a Moroka Swallows’ second string.
Middendorp’s relationship with his players looked to have dropped to a all-time low and management said his behaviour was erratic.
He had been at the club for just over a year, helping their successful battle against potential relegation last season but then failing to push on with the team in the current campaign.
The club have won once in their last 10 games and are just three points above the drop zone, with six vital matches left to play.
Middendorp is the seventh managerial casualty in the PSL this season.
