Maritzburg frustrate Ajax again

Cape Town - A 78th minute header by Maritzburg United substitute Fadlu Davids gave the Team of Choice a valuable 1-1 draw with Ajax Cape Town in an Absa Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium.

A 36th minute left-footed strike from a free kick taken by Brett Evans gave Ajax a much-deserved lead.

Ajax created a lot of chances in the first half with Khama Billiat and Terror Fanteni going close on several occasions.

Maritzburg were forced into an early substitution after the injured Matuka was replaced by Rheece Evans inside the first half.

Ajax’s persistent passing game paid off in the 36th minute when a foul by Sheldon Lawrence on Thembinkosi Fanteni resulted in a free kick, which was scored by Evans, who ironically played his junior football in Maritzburg.

Diyo Sibisi proved to be a pain in the neck for his former team-mates and came close to scoring on a number of occasions.

In the 42nd minute his left-footed shot from was parried away by Sean Roberts who had a busy night in goals.

In the 78th minute a Sibisi cross found the head of Davids in the Ajax danger area and the Cape Town-born forward capitalised, sending his header into the back of the net.
