Cape Town - Maritzburg United registered their first win in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge after defeating Ajax Cape Town 2-1 at University of Pretoria on Saturday.
The side from KwaZulu-Natal were the better side on the day and deservedly walked away with the three points on a chilly Saturday morning in the capital.
Prior this win, United had lost all their matches since the commencement of this tournament.
United were determined to do well in this match. From the first whistle, the side from KwaZulu-Natal attacked Ajax Cape Town. Their probe for goal was rewarded just after 13 minutes. Midfielder Sheldon Van Wyk rifled a leftfooted short to open the scoring after he was set up by Siphesihle Ndlovu.
Ajax did not create many chances but they did come close when Aidan Jenniker fired a ferocious shot that was tipped over the bar by United keeper Thami Duma.
United added another goal in the 28th minute through Menzi Chili. Ajax failed to clear their lines and Chili used the opportunity to capitalise.
Though Ajax were second best for the better part of the match, they did try their best to bounce back.
Zambian international Clifford Mulenga, Bantu Mzwakali and Noah Sadaoui caused trouble for United defence marshaled by former Jomo Cosmos defender Tshepho Moloto. Ajax’s search for equalizer yielded fruits after they pulled one back in the 72nd minute. Sadaoui, who had been outstanding throughout the game, was sent down the left.
The midfielder did well to spot United keeper Duma off the line and he curled his short beyond the reach of Duma.
Despite the goal, United continued to dictate matters. On numerous occasions, United did not capitalise on the many chances that they got.
When the final whistle went off United players and technical team were on cloud nine as it was their first taste of victory in this tournament.
