Maritzburg, Tuks share spoils

Pietermaritzburg - Maritzburg United and University of Pretoria earned a point each when their Absa Premiership clash ended in a 0-0 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

Both sides went into the clash looking to bounce back from their midweek losses but had to settle for a share of the spoils as a result of wayward shooting and good goalkeeping.

The home side created the early chances Yakubu Mohammed firing a tame shot at Washington Arubi in the 7th minute, while Terrance Mandaza did the same a minute later.

The visitors had their first chance from a setpiece in the 17th minute but Siyabonga Ngubane shot over the crossbar after Lucky Mathosi had been brought down by Mario Booysen.

Obadiah Tarumbwa then struck the woodwork for AmaTuks in the 31st minute, while Mandaza headed Dillon Sheppard’s cross over the crossbar seven minutes later.

The second half saw more in the way of goalmouth action with Ernst Middendorp’s side asking the questions soon after the restart.

Arubi did well to block a shot from Mandaza in the 47th minute before pulling off another great save to deny Yakubu six minutes later.

Midway through the half, Tarumbwa saw another one of his efforts flying wide of goal in the 69th minute, while Ruben Cloete’s shot found Arubi in a good position two minutes later.

Both sides could have stolen maximum points at the death but Yakubu fired wide from a good position in the 90th minute, while substitute Dipsy Selolwane was denied a late winner by a good save from Shu-aib Walters at the other end.
