Makonese very much alive

Johannesburg - Former Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese whose “death in a traffic accident along the Ngundu road” spread like wildfire in Zimbabwe and South Africa on Saturday is alive and kicking.

Speculation was rife that the current Pirates player could have faked his own death but the 33-year-old hardman denied this last night.

Makonese told Standardsport from Zvishavane, where he has been based for the last two weeks, that “people wish him dead” but was well and had not been involved in a road accident.

“I always tell people that they have a problem. Many of them are always after me but I do not know why. I think one person who is after me might have started the rumour that I had passed away. I know it happens,” Makonese said.

Makonese was in the company of his brother, who was also inundated with calls from their relatives in Chiredzi and Masvingo, who had also received news of Zvenyika’s “death”.

“We got more than 50 calls as many people wanted to know what had happened to Zve (Zvenyika Makonese),” Newington Makonese Bhasera said.

“We even went on to get calls from our parents in Masvingo who had heard the message from these social networks.”

Makonese “condolences” were on social network site Facebook with leading sports broadcaster Mike Madoda announcing his death on the popular Sportsline.

“Our thoughts at Sportsline are with the Makonese family. At the peak of his career, Zvenyika represented his country with distinction. May his soul rest in peace and to his family and friends we pray that may the Lord assuage the anguish of their bereavement,” Madoda wrote.

Makonese’s Facebook wall was also plastered with “condolences”. The defender, who was offloaded two days ago by Orlando Pirates, did not post any messages.
