Lekgwathi to remain at Pirates?

Johannesburg - With recent doubts regarding the future of the veteran Orlando Pirates skipper Lucky Lekgwathi, the Buccaneers have remained mum on the future of their long-serving defender.

Pirates’ Administration Officer, Floyd Mbele, says the club will not discuss players’ contracts at present.

There will however be a meeting with chairperson Irvin Khoza and Lekgwathi in due course.

Discussions will also take place with Oupa Manyisa and Patrick Phungwayo, who are waiting to sign new contracts for the upcoming season.

“Look, Lucky (Lekgwathi) is not different from other players in the team,” Mbele told Sport24 on Friday.

“By that I mean we are not discussing players’ movements at the moment.

“But we are still going to sit down with him and the chairman together with all players waiting for new contracts to discuss a way forward.

“Then we’ll announce the final outcome towards the end of the month.

“Yes, for now he remains part of Orlando Pirates Football Club and that’s all I can say for now.”

Lekgwathi, 38, missed the entire 2014/15 Absa Premiership campaign due to an ankle injury.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
