Lekgwathi: Referee cost us

2011-09-20 11:38

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes that Buyile Gqubule, who was refereeing the Soweto derby on Saturday afternoon, cost Pirates.

Lekgwathi claims that Gqubule blew his whistle before Bernard Parker took his free-kick which, according to him, brought the game to a halt. Parker’s free-kick subsequently found the back of the net beating Moeneeb Josephs and handing Kaizer Chiefs the lead.

“After the referee awarded Chiefs a free-kick, we were all ordered to stand back the mandatory 10-yards, which we did. Then, as Parker took the shot, the referee blew his whistle signalling that Oupa Manyisa broke away from the wall before the ball was touched by Parker. We all stopped, expecting a re-take but, to our surprise, when the ball hit the back of the net, the referee pointed straight to the centre line and ran away.

“I then went up to him and asked about it but he didn’t even say a single word. I’m not making excuses but I believe the referee cost us dearly. Even Parker delayed his celebration because he wasn’t sure what was going on,” revealed a dejected Lekgwathi.

He further revealed that he had to calm the situation down, as his team-mates were charging towards the official. Despite the questions surrounding referee Gqubule’s actions, the captain went on to congratulate Chiefs on their win.

“I had to calm the boys down because it was really uncharacteristic of them to charge at the referee but I understood their frustration. So I had to protect them from getting into trouble, but congratulations to Chiefs. I’ll be the first one to admit that we didn’t impose ourselves in the first-half, which is something the coach worked on in the first-half and we came back stronger in the second-half,” concluded Lekgwathi.

its true Cullen and @ themba.masilela3 you R ALSO A SORE LOSER LIKE THE REST OF PIRATES FANS AND LEKGWATHI, FGO TO HELL

  • Mandisi Sithole - 2011-09-20 11:55

I totally agree with the captain. the ref was really not doing his job. Its not about being a sore loser but I also think he wasn't fair. I think PSL or SAFA should screen the referees because who knows if one is bias or not?

      Dilika - 2011-09-20 13:20

Since when did you guys realise that referees are biased - before or after the Saturday derby? If you can prove to me that Pirates has never had a favourable referees' decision then I will accept your complain but for now its just a bunch of worm-infested and very SOUR grapes.

      Colonel_Stieglitz_27 - 2011-09-20 15:44

@Mandisi............freakin Gqubule is unfit, take a good look a that stomach. You would swear he breathes with the whistle. Basics to refereeing dictates that an official should always be close to the action to get a good view on infringements and subsequently make proper decisions. Where was Gqubule when Sweswe obstucted Ndulula inside the 18 area? I have always wondered, why Bucs always lose when he is officiating **just a thought**.........I smell a dead rat here!!

      nangamso1 - 2011-09-20 16:07

@ Colonel I'm sure if you won or even drew you wouldn't be saying that its high time you(pirates morons) accept defeat and since when does a three wins make you unbeatable to chiefs

It is easier to blame the ref for the loss than rather looking at bad defending and giving away a free kick so close to your goal.

  • nboasfifi - 2011-09-20 12:52

we all the victims of bad refries, when we benefit from poore perfomance off the oficials we dont complain but when we loose we complain, we loose some n win some.

  • Me - 2011-09-20 13:54

Loser Loser Loser, that's all you are

      mpho30 - 2011-09-20 16:37

He is captain of his team. A team that has won 5 of the 7 cups it has contested for in the last 12 months...re-look what loser means, cause honestly it is NOT Lucky Lekgwathi

  • NJE - 2011-09-20 14:37

    Sort out ur defence boy

  • Spiwo - 2011-09-20 14:52

    loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jenny - 2011-09-20 15:53

A referee can destroy a decent game, as a lousy umpire can mess up a cricket match. It did seem suspect to me that Chiefs won when Pirates usually beat them or the match is drawn. Pirates and Chiefs are the top supported team in the country, might be an idea to get a ref from outside the country to ref these matches.

      farmworker - 2011-09-20 16:24

@Jenny where did you get your facts

  • otse - 2011-09-20 16:00

the ref was whack but parkers goal was just legendary

  • OLIBO - 2011-09-20 17:29

When is SAFA going to ban this FATBOY Gqubule? Remember the incident in the MTN semi-final. Register your complaint with SAFA Referees Committee through Adeel Carelse: adeel@safa.net

  • Agwambo - 2011-09-20 20:26

On events of the day, Chiefs were by far a better side and if they were a bit ruthless in front of goals, could have massacred Pirates. Whenever, they surged forward, they looked more likely to score than Bucs

  • YES - 2011-09-21 07:53

Congratulations to chiefs. Gqubule officiated in two matches (i.e. MTN 8 and the league match) as there were complaints about him. I think those in charge have taken note of people's complaints lest fans storm the pitch and the situation becomes worse again. It is people like Gqubule who cause riots and killings at stadiums because he is looking after his own interest. It's not up to referrees to determine results of the game but players. If attend games with the results already determined then there will be no entertainment and it's killing the game. Hence, am calling upon the powers that be to seriously pay attention to such complaints otherwise it doesn't improve standard of football in the country. And without showing any partisan to a particular team between the two, I wish to implore football fans to be rational and objective in their criticisms.

Pie-rats dat a stupied excuse of the referee.next tyme tell ur players to score Goal.finish nd klaar

  • lapfa - 2011-09-21 19:42

The refereeing was very poor indeed. At least Daniel Bennet is fit and back to business. This Gqubule must never officiate in a pirates game.
