Komphela downplays Chiefs departures

Cape Town - Newly-appointed Kaizer Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela, says in football nobody is irreplaceable, in the wake of the club losing three marquee players in the off-season.

Amakhosi announced the departures of Tefu Mashamaite, Itumeleng Khune and Mandla Masango after failing to agree contract extensions with the players in question.

Komphela, who replaced Stuart Baxter as coach, was confident the exodus would not affect the team in the upcoming season.

"It's hard to see such players go but if you look at last season, Khune didn't play that much because of injury and the two goalkeepers did very well," Komphela told Soccer Laduma.

"As for 'Masha' he came in after Morgan Gould got injured which means Gould can still do that job if he is fit.

"As for Mandla, he had cover on the bench and that's why he was coming from the bench in other games. So it's possible to replace these players and we could also look at bringing in other players.”

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
