According to Soccer Laduma, Matthews reveals that their objective was to hold onto the 30-year-old on a permanent basis since the winger inked a loan deal from Orlando Pirates.
“We had every intention of keeping Daine at the club,” said Matthews.
“We were open with him from the start, and said that if he felt he had a mouth-watering offer elsewhere, then we wouldn't break our wage structure to keep him here.
“We offered him our best deal but couldn't justify matching the offer he was getting from elsewhere. We wish him the best go forward.”
It has been reported that Wits tabled a late offer for the midfielder that was hard for the speedster to decline.
Klate and Wits are yet to agree any terms and but the Clever Boys announcement of striking a deal is said to be imminent.
