Khune PSL's big award winner

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was named the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Footballer of the Year at Gold Reef City on Sunday night.

According to the Soccer-Laduma website, the Bafana Bafana stopper scooped a phenomenal four awards at the annual PSL Awards after a stunning season for the Glamour Boys, where he showed maturity and growth between the sticks.

Spider Kid led his team to a double, with Chiefs winning the ABSA Premiership before they completed the season on Saturday with a win over SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup final.

Khune has not only continued to prove his sheer talent when it comes to shot stopping - having pulled off another host of fine saves throughout the season - but his superb distribution and consistency has been vital in bringing glory back to Naturena.

Along with being named as the top player this term, he was also named Goalkeeper of the Season, the Players' Player of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

In the Coach of the Season category, Chiefs tactician Stuart Baxter beat off competition from Bloem Celtic's Clinton Larsen and Platinum Stars' Cavin Johnson. Baxter turned things around drastically at Chiefs as they went from the lows of 2011/12 to winning a league and cup double just a year later.

The Golden Boot award was wrapped up by Moroka Swallows’ Katlego Mashego for his 13 goals this term, a showing that earned him a recall to the national team by coach Gordon Igesund. Staying with goal, SuperSport United’s Mor Diouf bagged the Goal of the Season with his stunning strike from well inside his own half against Mamelodi Sundowns.

It truly was a night for the goalkeepers as SuperSport United's Ronwen Williams was the Red Hot Young Player of the Season for some outstanding performances in goal for Matsatsantsa as they made two cup finals and finished in the top eight.

There was a mixed bag of winners when it came to the cup tournaments. The MTN8 Last Man Standing award went to Lerato Chabangu, who was the joint top scorer as Swallows cruised to the title. Bloem Celtic's Joel Mogorosi was named the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament.

In the Nedbank Cup, Platinum Stars defender Tshepo Gumede was named the Most Promising Player while winning captain Khune was the Player of the Tournament.

The men who are charged with making the big decisions on match days were also honoured, with Victor Gomes named Referee of the Season while Enoch Molefe was Assistant Referee of the Season.
