Jomo Cosmos back in the PSL

Johannesburg - Jomo Cosmos are back in the Absa Premiership after beating Bay United 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Makhulong Stadium on Sunday. The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Cosmos won their NFD Inland Stream comfortably while Bay secured their NFD title chase in their penultimate match to qualify for the two-legged promotional play-offs.

The first-leg ended 0-0 as well but both teams played attractive, attacking football. Several chances were created but they could not make it count.

In the second-leg it was just the opposite as both teams were more cautious going forward and fewer chances were created.

Cosmos veteran striker Alton Meiring missed with a header early on and so did his opposite Walter Ramulondi. Both strikers though ran tirelessly but just did not have chances to shoot at goal.

Coach Jomo Sono introduced the younger and quicker Norman Smith in the second half for Meiring, and the speedy hitman had a few near chances but just could not get a sure touch on the ball. The tension was rising as time ran out and Bay seemed prepared for penalties as they wound the game down.

Brice Aka stepped up for the first penalty and Avril Phali stopped his effort. The referee Victor Gomes ordered a retake and Aka made sure of his second chance. Katlego Loke then netted for Cosmos much to the delight of the crowd.

Bay players Zamaxulo Ngalo, Lungelo Yekiso and Lekakatlela Galane all scored while Lehlohonolo Nonyane, Sbu Nhlapo and Tshepo Moloto found the net for Cosmos.

Bay's Kopana Sekgobela missed, then Cosmos Bongane Theletsane also missed, and Siphiwe Sithole missed Bay's final kick. El Hadji Samb stepped up to drive home the last penalty and to take Cosmos into the Premiership.
