Johnson questions Stars goal

Johannesburg - SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson disputed the opposition's goal after his side was held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars in a Premiership clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night.

Siphelele Mthembu opened the scoring for Dikwena after stealing the ball from Thabo September, who had his hand raised appealing for offside.

"Definitely it was a soft goal from what I saw...Siphelele came from an offside position," Johnson said after the game in Atteridgeville.

"In saying that, I thought this was not a bad game of football but when you look at it, I think we should have gone home with three points.

"The players pushed very hard but the decision-making was a bit of a problem in the final third."

The Matsatsantsa mentor, however, said he was pleased that they got something from what was a tightly contested match.

"We will live with one point," said Johnson.

"We said to ourselves the next nine games are going to be cup finals for us if we want to compete and really push the league to another level.

"This is one of those games that we started off with but I think we will get better."

With the league title seemingly out of reach for the Pretoria side, as they trail leaders Kaizer Chiefs by 15 points, Johnson said the aim would now be to remain in the top eight.

"I think the best we can hope for is to end up in the top five. If we push very hard we could well end up in the top five," Johnson said.

"It's not impossible with the type of football we play sometimes."

Meanwhile, Stars coach Allan Freese said he was pleased with his team's all-round performance and with getting something away from home.

"I think we had a brilliant game, we played according to instructions and stuck to our game plan," Freese said.

"We had a brilliant game but we just couldn't score and it happens sometimes when you just can't find the net. It was a beautiful game and I enjoyed it.

"It was just unlucky that we didn't get three points but we will take one point and go home."

The result sees United remain in fifth position with 34 points from 22 matches, while Stars are seventh with 32 points from 21 games.
