Gordon Igesund is the new coach of SuperSport United, the club's chairman Khulu Sibiya announced on Wednesday.

"We are very pleased to welcome Gordon Igesund to SuperSport United's family as our head coach," Sibiya told SuperSport's Blitz channel.

"I am very excited about the acquisition that I have now. It's a long time coming and I think Gordon will add a lot of value to the team.

"After meeting with him on Monday, you could see this man has been waiting to jump into the ship, it's not like he was dragged kicking and screaming to join this team."

Igesund has been appointed on a two-year contract and will be assisted by his former Bafana Bafana assistant coach and former SA under-20 coach Serame Letsoaka.

"I am very honoured and privileged to be part of this SuperSport team," Igesund said.

"You can see they are a very ambitious team. They have a fantastic way forward and a lot of young kids coming though in development, which I like very much and I'm happy to be involved so quickly after coaching Bafana Bafana," Igesund said.

The former national team coach will take over the reigns with immediate effect at Matsatsantsa after the club fired Cavin Johnson last Friday.

Igesund remains the only coach in local football to have guided four different clubs to Premiership titles.

The 58 year-old mentor captured success with Manning Rangers in the 1996/1997 season, Orlando Pirates (2000/2001), Santos (2001/2002) and Mamelodi Sundowns (2006/2007).

His two-year stint with the national side ended unceremoniously when the SA Football Association announced in June it would not be renewing his contract, which expired at the end of August.

During his tenure, the national side recorded 14 wins, nine losses and nine draws.

Igesund's last stint as a club coach was with Moroka Swallows during the 2011/2012 season. He steered the club to the brink of a league title, finishing runners-up, only two points behind eventual champions Orlando Pirates.

He takes over a Matsatsantsa team languishing at the tail-end of the Premiership table -- in 14th place -- with just one win and four losses.

The string of below-par results, included being dumped out of the season opening MTN8 competition, losing 2-1 to Pirates.

Johnson became the first coaching casualty in the Premiership less than a month into the season. During his 13 month reign, the former three-time Premiership champions finished fifth in the league last season and failed to capture any cup silverware.
