Cape Town - SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund said that his team was tactically superior during the 1-0 victory against Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Sport is often about outplaying, outwitting and outlasting the opponents on the day and Igesund believes that SuperSport were superior in all three spheres this weekend.

“I didn’t want to say anything before the game, but I don’t know if everybody knows this, today we played three at the back and no right back - and I think the guys were superb,” said Igesund.

“The first half we were outstanding and we could have had a couple of goals, the second half we got the goal."

While SuperSport did take the initiative during the first stanza, it was actually the second 45 minutes which impressed the former South Africa coach the most, as his players absorbed the pressure and countered adversity against a group of hungry Pirates.

“The last five minutes they threw everything at us, but we defended well and I am very, very pleased. We got it spot on tonight," added Igesund.

“I knew it was probably going to take them a long time to understand what we were doing.

“I played with an out and out left-back, two centre-halves and no right back, and I knew that was going to help us because we had five in the middle of the park and they had four.

“I can sit here for hours talking about tactics, but all-in-all we worked very hard and the guys applied themselves very well. I was a little bit worried towards the end because Daine Klate couldn’t last the full 90 minutes, Kingston Nkhatha couldn’t last the full 90 minutes and of course this was Manyama’s first outing for a while.

“My biggest worry was going into extra-time, but I took the gamble and things paid off. The players were superb tonight and without a doubt I think we were the better team tonight.”
